Press Release: 29.11.10

What’s going on at the BOX?

CUSP is an exciting display of artwork, photography and film with insightful views on alcohol from the residents and young people of Banchory and will be on show at The Box, adjacent to the Bellfield Car Park on Friday 3rd December from 6.30-9.30pm and Saturday 4th December from 10.00am till 5.00pm.

CUSP is part of the Banchory Alcohol Project, which has been working with young people in Banchory to challenge attitudes to alcohol within young people locally and the team behind the project are keen for people to drop in and have a look.

Councillor Jill Webster, Chair of the group, said, “Not only binge drinking but also the use of alcohol at an increasingly young age is of concern to all communities and we wanted to address how it was affecting us here in Banchory. We have surveyed several year groups which revealed that 27% of S1-3 year groups who responded said, “Yes” to the question, “Have you ever been really drunk?” We are trying to generate awareness of this issue locally not only with young people but also with parents and thereby attempt to temper extremes of drinking with all the associated health and social problems which has become much more widespread in very young age groups.”

Janet McEwan, artist in residence who has been working on the project said, “I hope the work which has evolved from conversation, with many local people over the past months will encourage all generations in the local community to consider the ways we use alcohol, and why increasing numbers of very young people are placing themselves at risk through misuse. It seems that despite being aware of the dangers of overconsumption,
through alcohol awareness programmes etc, behaviour changes little. CUSP, a word which in the context of this project refers to the vulnerable transition stage between childhood and adulthood, aims to open up a space for conversation around this sensitive and complex issue. The BOX, which was previously used as a youth information drop in centre, is ideally located in Banchory town centre, and I hope local folk of all ages will come past to see the show, and have a chat.”
